We conducted field studies and user research at the Cincinnati History Museum with the goal of improving the museum’s experience. Rather than suggesting a costly redesign of the museum’s exhibits, we decided to focus on creating something that would supplement the museum visit for elementary school students on field trips – who represent a large segment of the museum’s visitors. We designed a program that involved all the stakeholders contributing to make the child’s visit a memorable one. The museum provides explorers’ kits to students, and an overview to teachers so that they can prepare their students prior to the visit. Teachers have in-class activites they can do pre- and post-visit. Museum docents are there on the day of the field trip to engage the students.
